In Matthew’s Gospel we have the fullest and most systematic account of the birth, life, teaching, death and resurrection of Jesus the Messiah. This very Jewish book sets out the purpose of Jesus’ coming and work: to bring light to all the nations.

theology have problems with it. It looks dangerously like justification by works, the very antithesis of Paul, Augustine and Luther. On closer inspection, the passage does not warrant either of these attitudes. There is much here that goes uncomfortably with a social gospel: the exalted Son of Man executing the final judgment of God is hardly a theme you would expect in those circles.
